Students won't lose semester, colleges vow

Strike by instructors in second week

Mar. 14, 2006. 11:00 AM

Ontario's 24 community colleges are promising 150,000 students they won't lose an entire semester because of an ongoing strike by instructors.

The colleges' committee of presidents says the Semester Completion Strategy will make sure students can finish their year despite the strike that began a week ago.

But each college must develop its own plan to ensure students get the instruction they need, and those details won't be released until next week.

Newspaper ads outlining the colleges' commitment will appear across the province tomorrow and Thursday, but students won't find out any details.

The aim is to allay fears of students worried the strike could delay graduation or botch their plans for summer jobs.

There are still no talks scheduled to end the walkout by 9,100 faculty and staff that began last Tuesday.

The provincial government has rejected repeated calls to get involved in the dispute, and is urging both sides to return to the bargaining table.
